History
The festival originated as thanksgiving for the end of the terrible plague of 1575-1577, which decimated the population. Out of devotion, the Venetian Senate had the majestic Chiesa del Redentore built on the island of Giudecca, entrusted to architect Andrea Palladio. Since then, every third weekend in July, Venetians pay homage to the Redentore with a celebration that combines faith and festivity.

Saturday, July 19 – The night of the fires
– Opening of the votive bridge: a floating bridge over 300 meters long connects the Zattere shore to the Chiesa del Redentore on Giudecca. Open since morning, it allows pilgrimage on foot to the shrine.
– Dinner by boat or along the fondamenta: Hundreds of boats decorated with colorful lanterns gather in Bacino San Marco to dine on the water. Also along the banks of the Zattere, convivial dinners with a view are organized.
– Fireworks show (at about 11:30 pm): the most anticipated moment! Fireworks light up the sky above the lagoon, providing a unique atmosphere between reflections on the water and music in the background.
Sunday, July 20 – The day of tradition
– Celebration of solemn Mass: at the Chiesa del redentore , with the participation of city authorities.
– Religious procession: across the votive bridge, hundreds of faithful make their way to the altar in a moment of recollection and devotion.
– Traditional regattas: in the afternoon, the famous Venetian regattas enliven the Giudecca Canal, with races between gondolas and other typical boats.
