Venice Carnival 2027

Carnival 2027 runs from 23 January to Tuesday 9 February, with the last ten days at the heart of the festival in the centre. Here are the dates, the events that come back every year and what we arrange for you: a boat for the water parades, a water taxi to move through the crowds, tickets for the balls and costumes.

Plan your Carnival

At a glance

When is Carnival 2027?
From 23 January to Tuesday 9 February 2027 (Shrove Tuesday), according to the official website. The theme and detailed programme are published by the organisers in the coming months.
Which days are busiest?
The two weekends and Shrove Tuesday. On weekdays Venice is easy to enjoy and you can photograph the masks without the crush.
Do we need a costume?
Not to walk around town, though many people wear one. For the masked balls in the palazzi period dress is required: you can hire it from Venetian ateliers.
How do we get around?
Around St Mark's and Rialto you walk slowly and the vaporetti are full. A water taxi takes you from one landing to another, away from the crowds.

Carnival events

These are the events that return every year. The organisers publish the 2027 days and times together with the theme: we update this page as soon as they are out.

The parade of decorated boats on the Cannaregio canal, between Ponte delle Guglie and Ponte dei Tre Archi, with music and shows on the water.

  2. First weekend

    Flight of the Angel

A figure in costume descends from the St Mark's bell tower over the crowded Square: the official opening in the Piazza.

  3. During Carnival

  5. 9 February 2027

    Shrove Tuesday

The last day, closing in St Mark's Square. The busiest day of all: book your boat and water taxi in advance.

Tips from people who work in Venice every day

  • Book your hotel now. For Carnival weekends, central rooms sell out months ahead.
  • Pick weekdays. The finest masks are out early in the morning, in the Piazza and the squares, before the crowds arrive.
  • Fit the costume first. Ateliers schedule the fitting the day before the ball: plan it into your stay.
  • Plan the way back. After a ball, in costume and at night, a pre-booked water taxi takes you to your hotel's water entrance.

Frequently asked questions

When does Venice Carnival 2027 start and end?

According to the official website it runs from 23 January to 9 February 2027, Shrove Tuesday. The theme and detailed programme are published by the Carnival organisers; the main events in the centre fall in the last days before Shrove Tuesday.

How do we attend a masked ball?

The balls in the palazzi are private ticketed events with limited places and period dress required. Tell us the date and how many you are: we look for places and arrange costume hire, a boat to get there and the ride back to your hotel.

Where can we hire a period costume?

At Venetian ateliers, which fit the costume to you and schedule a fitting before the event. We can book the appointment for you with the ateliers we work with.

How do we get from the airport to the hotel during Carnival?

With our water taxi, booked in advance: from Marco Polo Airport to your hotel's water entrance or the nearest landing, without going through Piazzale Roma and the crowded vaporetti.

Can we watch the water parades from a private boat?

Yes, within the navigation rules set for each event. Our captains know which routes are closed and take you where boats may stay.
